Your 40s energy crisis isn't about willpower, it's about systems.
I spent years pushing harder before realising the problem wasn't effort, it was my approach.
The body I had at 30 responded to intensity. The body I have at 51 responds to consistency and recovery.
Once I rebuilt my system around that truth, everything shifted. Here's what actually works:
𝗦𝗟𝗘𝗘𝗣 (non-negotiable)
↳ Set a phone alarm for 9pm to start winding down
↳ Keep your bedroom at 18°C / 65°F
↳ No screens 60 mins before bed (or use blue light blockers)
↳ Same wake time every day, including weekends
𝗧𝗥𝗔𝗜𝗡𝗜𝗡𝗚 (less is more)
↳ Drop from 5 cardio sessions to 3 quality ones
↳ Add 48hrs recovery between intense workouts
↳ Walk 8,000 steps daily (this matters more than you think)
↳ Strength train 3 x a week
↳ Prioritise mobility work over extra cardio
𝗦𝗧𝗥𝗘𝗦𝗦 (active management)
↳ 5 mins morning breathwork before checking your phone
↳ Schedule "worry time" so stress doesn't leak into everything
↳ Say no to more things that drain you
↳ 10-min walk after lunch (cortisol reset plus helps metabolism)
↳ Microbreaks every hour for 2 minutes to break the sitting and back-to-back meetings
𝗛𝗢𝗥𝗠𝗢𝗡𝗘𝗦 (work with them, not against them)
↳ Get bloodwork done annually
↳ Protein at every meal (1.6g per kg bodyweight)
↳ Strength training beats endless cardio for hormone support
↳ Talk to a professional if something feels off
𝗠𝗜𝗡𝗗𝗦𝗘𝗧 (the big one)
↳ Stop comparing to the younger you. Compete with yesterday's you
↳ Track your energy not weight; that's your real scorecard
↳ Unfollow social media accounts that makes you feel bad about yourself
↳ Consistency counts, not perfection or intensity
Remember, your 40s body isn't broken.
It just needs a different operating system than you needed in your 30s.
